Our family farmers first came to America in the 19th century. They settled in Mahaska County, Iowa to work the fertile soil and raise their children on the rolling landscape. With a common dream of agricultural achievement, the three families formed a unique bond. Through hard work and a sharing attitude, the families’ farms flourished.
In 1998, the Hog Market was headed in a downward direction. The families had a shared concern as the hog value depreciated due to surplus and minimum hog processing capacity. The three families began holding meetings to discuss their apprehensions and discovered a shared desire to become closer to the consumer, thus Vande Rose Farms was founded.
They thought that truly great pork begins with genetics, grains and sustainable farming. When the families came to the United States, they were dedicated to producing top quality pork-responsibly, humanely, and respectful of the environment. These practices ensured the quality of the pork for generations to come.
Five generations later, they still follow these same practices. They chose a special breed of pig, called Duroc, which is a pig known for its juicy and flavorful meat. Duroc is a heritage breed dating back to 1830, that produces pork that is desirable in color, tenderness and marbling. All of our sires are 100% Duroc. The mothers of our pigs are productive white breeds, selected for their meat quality. The result being, it just plain tastes better. Detailed records of genetics, weight, feed and life history are kept for each animal. This will assure you, the consumer, of the finest premium quality pork possible.
Evidence shows that the quality of the pork and the wholesome farming practices represents a clear difference between Vande Rose Farms Premium Duroc Pork and commodity pork being widely marketed. Premium Duroc Pork is a hit with the consumers!
Modern advances in pork production have created a number of headlines in recent years and consumers are rightly concerned about the negative impact certain practices have on the wellbeing of the animals, the environment and the people who work here and live nearby. At Vande Rose Farms, we’ve stood firmly against many of the temptations that drive the industry today. In sharp contrast, we are a sustainable farm that goes to great lengths to do things the right way, assuring the resources we have been given remain for generations to come.
Farm technology has changed over the last century, but not everything new is better. We use technology where it makes sense, but clearly avoid it when we think it is going to hurt the environment, our animals or alter the natural quality of our pork. We were among the first to get our hogs out of the filth and mud and into comfortable environmentally controlled facilities. Our hogs are housed in a setting that ensures good health and quality growth, but we won’t create a situation where the quality of our life or the wellbeing of our animals is compromised. Our hogs receive a rich diet of natural grains grown right here on our land, with absolutely no added growth promotants or antibiotics.
In the spring of 2006, we began producing Premium Hereford Beef with a similar care and attention to detail. In the fall of 2006, Vande Rose Farms started to deliver Premium Hereford Beef to our customers.
The Hereford delivers a quality of beef that was nearly lost in our modern society. It’s an amazing product that fits well with our customers. Our goal is to responsibly produce the best tasting Premium Hereford Beef available.
Today our family farms continue to flourish because we maintain a balanced approach between responsible farming practices and delivering exceptional tasting beef and pork.
